Global modernity and the challenge of building a new world

Abstract

Many debates are centered around the concept of Modernity. Today it is not clear if what this word stands for is a singular condition or if there are instead many different Modernities. In this text I will try to make the following argument: Modernity is the name for the challenges that human beings around the planet are experiencing in their search for a world which one day could become a world for all human beings.

Oliver Kozlarek, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo

Es doctor en Filosofía por la Free University de Berlín y doctor en Humanidades por la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. Imparte cursos de filosofía política y social así como teoría social en el Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas de la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo en Morelia, México. Ha sido profesor invitado en el Kulturwissenschaftliches Instituten Essen, en la New School for Social Research en Nueva York, y en la Universidad Stanford en California. Actualmente, es Cantemir Senior Fellow de la Fundación Berendel. Sus líneas de investigación son: teorías de modernidad y globalización, teoría crítica, globalización y humanismo, y pensamiento político y social latinoamericano. Ha escrito numerosas obras entre las cuales destacan: De la teoría crítica a una crítica plural de la modernidad (2007); Entre cosmopolitismo y “conciencia del mundo” (2007); Humanismo en la época de la globalización: Desafíos y horizontes (2009) (con Jörn Rüsen); Octavio Paz: Humanism and Critique (2009); Moderne als Weltbewusstsein. Ideen für eine humanistische Sozialtheorie in der globalen Moderne (2011) y Shaping a Humane World: Civilizations, Axial Times, Modernities, Humanisms (2012) (con Jörn Rüsen y Ernst Wolff).
