Humanism as Criticism
Erich Fromm’s homo negans and Creative Love in Humanist Psychology
Keywords:
Erich Fromm, Octavio Paz, humanism, critical theorie, social characterAbstract
The article intends to reconstruct some of the central ideas that Erich Fromm applies in his version of Critical Theory. I am especially interested in the way in which Fromm orients his Critical Theory in a kind of humanism that he extracts from two of his major sources of inspiration: Freud and mainly Marx. The different topics that will be discussed are: the relationship between criticism, psychoanalysis and humanism, the concepts “social character” and “social unconscious”, and the topic of alienation that Fromm defines from a humanist perspective as dehumanization. The last part of the article tries to establish a dialogue between the humanism in Fromm’s work and the thought of Mexican poet and essayist Octavio Paz.
