Keywords:
Middle East, Islam, fundamentalism, Jihadism, international politicsAbstract
This article has two principle objectives: first, to clarify some ideological aspects that will permit a better understanding of the current political situation in the Middle East and, second, to analyze how those aspects have influenced various specific processes of Islamic fundamentalism. To this end, it elucidates some basic elements that define fundamentalism in a general way. The essay then discusses the phases and development of the phenomenon of Islamic fundamentalism in an approach that identifies the ideological differences between Islamic resurgence and Jihadism, emphasizing the key elements that distinguish them and allow the reader to comprehend the development and political articulation of radical Islamism in its Jihadi manifestation, which sustains as its center of political action the idea of “Holy War” (Jihad).
