The objectification of the beloved: a lyrical device in Spanish-language love poetry
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article explores Poemas de amor by Alfonsina Storni as a key example of the transformation of the female lyrical voice in the Latin American tradition. Through comparison with traditional male poetry and figures such as Norah Lange, it examines how Storni subverts inherited models of love representation. The analysis focuses on elements such as the objectification of the beloved, automatic writing, and the supernatural, interpreting the poem as both a sentimental gesture and an act of poetic autonomy. The study also engages with Paul de Man’s notion of prosopopoeia and the feminist theories of Julia Kristeva and Hélène Cixous, arguing that Storni’s work anticipates a new conception of language, love, and female subjectivity in literary discourse.
