Abstract

This paper presents the “problem of religion” as it appears in Sigmund Freud’s writings, where we attempt to underline the novelty of his criticism of religion and some of its assumptions —such as a peculiar idea of reason and his individual understanding of the relationship between science and the rest of the cultural expressions of scientism. We are particularly interested in valuing Freud’s critiques addressed to science, in order to see if they still can be endorsed as they are or if they have to be attenuated or adequated.
