Action and Regret in Sophocles’ Philoctetes
Keywords:
Action theory, Philoctetes, Aristotle, praxis, akrasíaAbstract
This work proposes a reading of Sophocles’ Philoctetes that deals especially with the presence of the ethical phenomenon of contrition in the Greek tragic plot, with special attention to the positive meaning of incontinence (akrasía) which Aristotle argues for in Nicomachean Ethics, vii. We consider the main approaches that from the realm of Classical philology and Philosophy have been proposed about this tragedy of Sophocles (Vernant, Nussbaum, Reinhardt), in order to highlight three dimensions of the ethical instruction that this work provides: a) the display of the limit between a worthy life and mere survival, setting out that the former depends on living in community with others, b) the desirability that the subject reviews its own moral positions with the help of contrition, and c) the extent of epheby for shaping a strong moral character according to the ethical models of the ancient Greece.
