Abstract

The objective of this article is to elucidate the utilization of Buddhist and Christian elements in the philosophical proposals of Keiji Nishitani. To this end, it emphasizes the importance of this Japanese thinker in the Kyoto school and delimits the coincidences of his thought with the religious orientations of his time and place. Certain critical positions that Nishitani held regarding Buddhism, despite the fact that he practiced it throughout his lifetime, are demonstrated, as are some of his principal involvements with Christian ideology. Finally, the text presents six aspects that make up what we might call spiritual philosophy or philosophical spirituality that, derived from Nishitani’s writings, clearly manifests a directionality towards vacuity.
