Abstract

Opera does not currently have the popularity that it enjoyed in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries when its function was cultural and educational. In the process of opera's survival, the term bel canto emerged as a description of the highest level of vocal performance that, in addition to turning opera into a spectacle, generated a wealth production enterprise, especially in lower social classes. Due to the historical emotional impact that this vocal aesthetic produced, the original writings of the castrated singers will be consulted to elucidate an unfiltered, uninfluenced meaning of bel canto.
