Ethics and natural philosophy in Robert Boyle
Keywords:
Robert Boyle, ethics, philosophyAbstract
What we could call Robert Boyle’s philosophical project constituted an attempt to establish an adequate relationship between God and nature without omitting free will. At the same time it sought to avoid tension between facts and arguments and between empiricism and rationalism. The back-ground of Boyle’s thought in religion and natural philosophy can be seen in his ethical ideas. Boyle develops a prudential epistemology, applied to theology as well as to natural philosophy, which did not assure absolute certainty, but provided enough certainty for practical purposes while moving away from any radical skepticism.
