The unconscious and its conscience
The genitive linkage between two antithetical terms

Despite the essential antinomy between the unconscious and conscience, numerous thinkers have implicitly admitted the existence of a conscience of the unconscious. To outline the history of this genitive linkage, certain classical approaches to the unconscious are reviewed, beginning with four descriptive conceptions: Leibniz’s small perceptions, Kant’s dark representations, Ribot’s unconscious matter, and Janet’s subconscious spirit. The article then analyzes the explanatory conceptions offered by Spinoza, Hartmann and Nietzsche, as well as Freud’s repressed unconscious and Lacan’s symbolic unconscious.
