Toward an Esthesiology of Mental Space
Sketching a Merleaupontyan Theory of Mind
Keywords:
Merleau-Ponty, theory, MindAbstract
Merleau-Ponty developed a theory of perception as founded on behavioral habits, as well as a theory of language as a modality of corporal expression. Nevertheless, his project of elucidating the bodily and perceptive foundations of abstract thinking remained unconcluded. Considering the philosopher’s indications, two alternative routes of investigation remain open. The first one is founded on the linguistic nature of thought, whereas the second one considers the possibility of a non-linguistic but imaginary kind of thinking. This paper proposes to follow the second course of analysis by complementing Merleaupontyan theoretical develop ments with those pertaining to R. Arnheim and experimental Gestaltic Psychology, advancing toward a synesthetic and kinesthetic conception of imagination.
