“The Absolute Spirit Must also Have a Body”
A Review of the Relation between Epoché and Corporality in Husserl and Merleau-Ponty
Keywords:
Phenomenology, reduction, corporeality, pregivenness, worldAbstract
Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology introduced the notion of être au monde, suggesting at first sight a departure from Husserlian notion of phenomenological reduction. In the present article we intend to show that this opinion arise from an interpretation that excludes the developments of Ideas II, where Husserl thematizes the notions of embodiment, natural attitude and “pregivenness”. From this point Merleau-Ponty designs his position without radical breaks. The analysis of the “paradox of corporeal God” in both authors provide additional data indicating the pertinence of this interpretation.
