Ethical-moral Perspectives on the Relation between Mankind and Non-human Animals
Keywords:
rights, animals, anthropocentrism, constructivist, casuisticAbstract
The discussion surrounding animal rights has traditionally been defined on the basis of a logic that compares the capacities of humans with those of non-human animals, which has led to an anthropocentric vision and, eventually, to the negation of rights to non-human animals. The objective of this work is to reconsider this anthropocentric vision and propose –from a constructivist-casuistic perspective– alternative ways of considering non-human animals as moral subjects with rights. To this end, following Peter Singer and Martha Nussbaum, the essay expounds the ideas of ‘animal pain’ and ‘flourishing’, as foundations for the thesis that animal rights should be characterized and defined on the basis of the particular features of each species.
