Phenomenology at the edges of empathy

Abstract

A first approach of transcendental phenomenology to the subject of subjectivity and consciousness of nonhuman animals is developed in eight points. Animal subjectivity and consciousness are understood as transcendental and are intimately linked with animal corporality and the constitution of the animal world. The diversity of possible constitutions of the world is investigated due to the interrelation between subjectivity, corporality and the world. Such diversity of constitutions is understood as diversity of ways of appearing the same true world (diversity of intuitive worlds), and the human constitution is deemed as the normal constitution. The possibility of a “practical” truth in animals is admitted; but it is also recognized that the intuitive human world has no prerogative as to the possibility of discovering the truth of the world. The aspects of empathic experience with animals and the phenomenological strategy of “dismantling” that allow relative access to the animal world, and at the same time the reasons why animal life will always keep an enigmatic reserve are exposed.

Author Biography

Antonio Zirión Quijano, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

(Cd. de México, 1950) hizo toda su carrera de Filosofía en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y ha sido profesor allí mismo y en la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, en Morelia, Michoacán, donde ahora reside. Desde su ingreso en 1984 al Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas de la UNAM ha dedicado diversos proyectos a la difusión del pensamiento de Edmund Husserl y a la creación de herramientas para su estudio (Diccionario Husserl, Glosario-Guía para Traducir a Husserl, Bibliografía de Fenomenología en Español), incluyendo la traducción de los dos primeros libros de Ideas relativas a una fenomenología pura y una filosofía fenomenológica (Ideas I e Ideas II). Es autor de Historia de la fenomenología en México (2003) y de La fenomenología en México. Historia y antología (2009), y coautor con Ángel Xolocotzi de ¡A las cosas mismas! Dos ideas sobre la fenomenología (2018). Es miembro fundador (1999) y coordinador en México del Círculo Latinoamericano de Fenomenología. Dirigió la Serie Fenomenología en jitanjáfora Morelia Editorial (2003-2017), y desde 1997 coordina la edición de las Obras completas de José Gaos para la Coordinación de Humanidades de la UNAM. Tiene en prensa El sentido de la filosofía. Obra reunida sobre José Gaos (UNAM). En 2019 cambió su adscripción del Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas a la Unidad de Investigación sobre Representaciones Culturales y Sociales, en el Campus Morelia de la UNAM.
