His professional work was carried out in parallel with the industrialization process with an impact on the political, economic and social system of postcardenism Mexico. This paper explores his life and scientific practice, as well as his contribution to that discipline. The story follows the methodology of a scientific biography and is inserted in the studies on the social history of science. Studying Álvarez Jr. shows that the advance of Mexican geology was not confined exclusively to the Geological Institute; there were other institutions and public policies that broadened the horizon of action of national geologists.
