The Stasi: machine of repression and citizen surveillance in the German Democratic Republic (GDR)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Using high quality bibliography and unpublished German sources, the article traces the creation and mechanisms used by the Stasi (famous abbreviation for the Ministry for State Security) to spy on and control the East German population during the Cold War. The article reveals with the concrete example of the Chilean diaspora in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the years of exile after the 1973 coup d’état how the left-wing individuals and groups that arrived in Berlin were also monitored. The article concludes by establishing the conditions that ultimately brought the Stasi’s activities to a close.
