Philosopher Manuel García Carpintero has recently proposed a new approach to define what fiction is, which he calls normative, that applies the theoretical framework of make-believe theories. This approach characterizes the concept of narrative literary fiction as a practice defined by a set of ideal and necessary entities, or in other words, by a set of constitutive norms. The present paper focuses on applying García Carpintero’s normative approach to define a specific type of fiction, namely fictionary literary narrative, relying on three concepts: fiction, narrative and literature. The conclusion is that fictionary literary narrative is a hybrid artifact designed to accomplish the functions relative to these three different concepts.
