Salmà Sā’ig y Salwà Salāma ’Aṭlas: two female writers from the Mahjar in Brazil
Keywords:
Arabic literature, women, diasporaAbstract
Mahjar literature developed throughout the American continent has an important number of Arab female exponents who, despite having made contributions to the cultural and literary production of the Arab renaissance and the diaspora movement, have been systematically discriminated and ignored. Salwā Salāma ’Aṭlas and Salmā Sā’igh are two female pioneer writers of the Mahjar movement in Brazil whose lives and works offer a counter-narrative in diaspora literature. These authors present a critical point of view that discovers experiences from a female perspective, thus defying patriarchal canons. Visibilizing a genealogy of Arab female writers also serves to foster knowledge of the origins of contemporary Arab literature, as well as of the transnational relations and representations between the Arab world and the American continent from a gender perspective.
