Political Violence and Economic Inequalities during the Crisis of the Republic of Rome
Keywords:
Roman Republic, violence, economic inequalityAbstract
Antonio Duplá Ansuategui analyzes the Roman Empire’s period of decadence that was brought on by increasing social polarization, as the vast majority of the people lacked even the barest essentials in terms of resources required for subsistence, while at the other pole lived a small minority that possessed great wealth, wielded power, and controlled decision-making. With time, this led to a proliferation of social manifestations marked by a violence that was, at times, organized, as in the murder of individuals who boasted high social status. Duplá observes a parallelism with our modern world so indelibly marked with comparable forms of organized violence, such as the terrorist attack of September 2011. However, he argues, studies and debates focusing on Imperial Rome have led to the rediscovery of certain forms of administration and political organization, and uncovered some of the causes of diverse manifestations of violence
