The possibility of non-violence and the tragic character of historical action
Keywords:
violence, non-violence, action, historyAbstract
The aims of our presentation are, first, to elucidate the sense in which violence pertains to the embodied condition of mankind; and, second, to analyze the manner in which violence is inserted into the structure of history. The development of these two themes will show that, from a world-historical perspective, the tragic character of historical action is unavoidable. Thirdly, setting out from the posture of Paul Ricoeur. we examine the degree to which the possibility of non-violence must originate in “an other place”. Finally, a brief evaluation of Merleau-Ponty’s and Ricoeur’s views will be offered in order to elucidate the scope of these two positions.
