100 years from the birth of Ernst Bloch’s utopian philosophizing

A hundred years ago Ernst Bloch’s first book was published. He himself considered it early writing, characterized by a “revolutionary romanticism” and marking an “anticipation” of his subsequent work. This study places Spirit of Utopia and its “appendix” about the rebellious leader Thomas Münzer in the biographic and intellectual context of its author and in the sociocultural and philosophical framework of its time, and examines the main ideas of a complex work still not translated into Castilian Spanish. Special attention is given to the aspects which initiated and prefigured –and continue to be valid even today– a philosophical thinking that is dissatisfied with a reality ruled by mediocrity and violence, and that seeks tentatively for avenues for its transformation, in both its objective and subjective dimensions.
